Another honor for Pakistan
Famous Pakistani scientist and educator Prof. Dr. Ata-Ur-Rehman has been awarded China’s highest civilian award.
Professor Ata-Ur-Rehman was awarded the “China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award for the Year 2020” in recognition of his valuable services in chemistry. He is the first Muslim scientist to receive the award. The award was presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great People’s Hall in Beijing.
Professor Ata-Ur-Rehman was born on September 22, 1942, in New Delhi (British India). After completing his primary education in Karachi, he received his PhD and Doctorate in Sciences from Cambridge University. He also holds honorary doctorates degrees in Organic Chemistry from the University of Bradford and the Asian Institute of Technology.
Professor Ata-Ur-Rehman started teaching from Karachi University in 1974 as an Associate Professor. He later became Professor of Chemistry at Karachi University and Patron En chef of Ibrahim Jamal Institute of Chemistry. He holds a Certificate in the Field of Organic Chemistry in South Asia and is the author of 1142 articles in Organic Chemistry, including 775 research works.
Prof. Ata-ur-Rehman has also served as Federal Minister for Education, Federal Minister for Science and Technology (March 2000-September 2002) and Chairman Higher Education Commission (October 2002-September 2008). He is currently the head of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Science and Technology and the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development

On the occasion of the 19th session of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 14th session of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, he was appointed by the Chinese President as an educator, teacher and intellectual at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In recognition of his valuable services in chemistry, he has been awarded the 2020 China International Science and Technology Award.
